The Newcastle Merchant Navy Memorial Committee in conjunction with Federal Member For Newcastle Sharon Claydon MP are hosting this service to commemorate the sacrifices made in Australia's defence by Merchant Mariner in times of war.
The year's service marks the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the Iron Chieftain by a Japanese submarine. Just 37 survivors were rescued from a lifeboat and washed up on the beach at The Entrance
In both World Wars our Region's merchant mariners played a vital role in keeping Australia's supply lines open.
The Merchant Navy Memorial is located on the Newcastle Foreshore between the Customs House roundabout and the Queens Wharf Brewery, Wharf Road.
Please contact 02 49261555 if you would like to lay a wreath or a tribute. Hunter Workers hope to see you there at 11am on Saturday 3rd June 2017.
