Hunter Workers (formerly known as Newcastle Trades Hall Council), stands in Solidarity with Hunter Workers Woman’s Committee, ACTU, ITF, and ITUC statements calling for an immediate cease fire and the safe return of all Hostages.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in devastating consequences for both Israeli and Palestinian civilians. The loss of innocent lives and the suffering endured by the people of the region are deeply troubling. Hunter Workers acknowledges the following points and calls for immediate action:
Condemnation of Violence:
Hunter Workers strongly condemns the bombing, killing, and kidnapping of Israeli civilians by Hamas on 7 October. Likewise, Hunter Workers condemns the disproportionate use of force by Israel in response to the attacks launched from Gaza, which has resulted in a humanitarian crisis for Palestinians. Hunter Workers stands firmly against all forms of violence and the targeting of innocent civilians.
Immediate Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid:
Hunter Workers joins the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in urging all parties to immediately de-escalate the conflict and establish humanitarian corridors to ensure the unimpeded flow of essential supplies into Palestine. Both Israeli and Palestinian civilians must be protected, and critical infrastructure, including hospitals, must be safeguarded from any form of targeting.
Diplomatic Intervention:
Hunter Workers calls upon the Australian Government to actively engage in diplomatic efforts to halt the violence and ground assault in Gaza, and to work towards a sustainable ceasefire. The government should utilise all available avenues to encourage dialogue and negotiation between the conflicting parties, with the aim of reaching a peaceful and just resolution.
Respect for International Law and Human Rights:
Hunter Workers emphasises the importance of upholding international law, including human rights, in finding a just and sustainable solution to the conflict. Hunter Workers supports a two- state solution with secure borders for both nations and urges all countries to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Solidarity and Support for Victims:
Hunter Workers stands in solidarity with both Israeli and Palestinian victims of the conflict and calls for the safe release of all hostages. Hunter Workers condemns all statements inciting violence against civilians and stresses the significance of protecting the rights and lives of all individuals, irrespective of their nationality or ethnicity.
Hunter Workers acknowledges the concerns raised by our members, emphasising the need to address various violations of international law in the region. We believe that the Australian Government, in line with its commitment to peace and security, can play a crucial role in facilitating the necessary steps towards de- escalation and the provision of urgent humanitarian aid in Gaza.
All wars are fought against children, workers and ordinary citizens. Hunter Workers reiterates our strong opposition to all violence as well as racism, in all its forms.
