Hunter workers can't risk Dutton

Newcastle Herald editorial by Leigh Shears, Hunter Workers Secretary

As we head to the polls in 2025, the nation is at a crucial juncture. For industries and workers that sustain the economy, this election represents a pivotal opportunity to protect and extend hard-won rights and reforms. In many ways, the 2025 election isn't dissimilar to the 2022 election. We sacked Scomo and got Dutton as Opposition Leader, but nothing about the LNP has changed other than hairstyles.

This election is not just about politics; it is about the kind of country Australians want to live in. Will we continue to build on the progress achieved in recent years, creating workplaces where fairness, security, and equity are paramount? Do we want a future that gives confidence to our future generation of Hunter workers?

Or will we return to a system that prioritises profits over people, leaving workers and communities to bear the brunt of economic uncertainty and job insecurity?

Acknowledgement of Country

Hunter Workers acknowledges the Awabakal, Worimi and Wonnarua Nations as the traditional custodians of Newcastle and the Hunter region, and recognises their continuing cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters, and seas.
We pay respect to the wisdom of the Elders past and present, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders visiting this website.

Hunter Workers recognises that the Union Movement has not always upheld our defining principle of solidarity, having oftentimes excluded First Nations comrades historically. We are committed to the work of reconciliation.
