Hunter Workers' Statement on Gaza

Hunter Workers (formerly known as Newcastle Trades Hall Council) stands in Solidarity with the ACTU and calls for an end to the occupation of Palestine, and a just and sustainable peace in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

Hunter Workers and the Australian Union movement in general, is a movement of peace and respect for all races and nationalities. We oppose war, racism, and oppression. We act in solidarity.

We are horrified by the escalating violence and death toll of civilians in Gaza and continue to call for an urgent and permanent ceasefire and the release of hostages and political prisoners.

The situation facing people in Gaza is dire: two million people are facing food insecurity. Hunter Workers backs the ACTU call on the Australian Government to take immediate steps to secure peace and calls for an end to the occupation of Palestine and a just and sustainable peace in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

In doing so we reiterate our strong condemnation of any form of Antisemitism and Islamophobia or any religious discrimination, and restate our call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, and commitment to building lasting peace in the region.

Hunter Workers believes that all wars are fought against children, workers, and ordinary citizens. And that a world free of the threat of war, benefits all.

Acknowledgement of Country

Hunter Workers acknowledges the Awabakal, Worimi and Wonnarua Nations as the traditional custodians of Newcastle and the Hunter region, and recognises their continuing cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters, and seas.
We pay respect to the wisdom of the Elders past and present, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders visiting this website.

Hunter Workers recognises that the Union Movement has not always upheld our defining principle of solidarity, having oftentimes excluded First Nations comrades historically. We are committed to the work of reconciliation.
