This World Teachers' Day, let's listen and fully fund public schools

Happy World Teachers' Day!

Teachers make an incredible impact building a better world and brighter future for all, thanks to their hard work, dedication, patience, and commitment to education.

But let’s not just celebrate teachers today; let’s listen to them.

Australia’s public schools have been denied full funding for more than a decade, with 98% of schools currently underfunded. Shockingly, more than half of private schools in NSW are now receiving more government funding per student than comparable public schools.

This shortfall seriously constrains the capacity for teachers to provide the education every child deserves. Schools are plagued with chronic workforce shortages while teachers juggle escalating workloads- NSW teachers are working on average 55 hours a week!

Let’s remember it’s not enough to just thank teachers for their contributions. It’s time to listen to what they’re telling us, support them, and work to ensure public schools are receiving the full funding urgently needed.
